Real-time drilling analytics: invisible non-productive time, measured
In well drilling, time is the biggest cost. We developed an operational analytics platform that captures real-time data from the drilling rig's sensors and turns it into performance indicators for every operation: drilling, tripping, casing, rigging, BHA and BOP.
The challenge
- Some time is lost in obvious ways —failures and waiting— and is recorded as non-productive time.
- Other time never shows up in any report: connections that take longer than needed, trips slower than standard and pre-connections that stretch minute by minute.
- Because operations keep moving forward, this invisible non-productive time goes unseen, unmeasured and uncorrected.
- Performance across shifts, crews and wells was judged by perception, not by a comparable number.
The solution
A platform that runs locally on the drilling rig, works even offline and replicates data to the cloud so it can be consulted from anywhere:
Automatic measurement of every event
Every connection, every stand and every meter drilled is recorded automatically, with no manual entry.
Comparison against target
Each metric is evaluated against the operation's standard and classified as good, fair or poor.
Time breakdown
Pre-connection, slip-to-slip connection, post-connection and sub-operations such as reaming, circulation or survey.
Shifts and crews
Average ROP, efficiency, consistency and variability by day and night shift, to identify best practices and replicate them.
In-operation alerts
A warning when an operation deviates from what is expected, so it is corrected on the spot rather than at the end of the well.
Filters for fair comparisons
Analysis by stage and run, by configuration —single joints or stands— and by bit position, in open or cased hole.
Results
- Non-productive time that used to be invisible is now measured and can be addressed.
- Performance moves from perception to a number comparable across shifts, wells and rigs.
- Best practices are identified with data and become the operation's standard.
- Deviations are caught during operations, not weeks later, with 24-hour reports, per-well summaries and a fleet-wide view.
